(Not so) special announcement before I get to this week’s list…*drumroll please* New logo (which you can see in the navigation) + I’ve been writing this newsletter for about 4.5 years now, and, after some thought, I’d like to add a paid tier! To be honest, I feel weird asking friends to pay for my newsletter. I don’t want to burden anyone with having to participate in something they don’t want to, so feel free to ignore haha. Monday Fundays will continue to be free and weekly :)
But Kat, what will the paid tier get? I’ll be adding an extra post every week–most likely deep-dives on things like TV shows, movies, and anything else I’m wanting to ramble on about 🤓 There’s a lot of different content I want to share, and I have a bunch of ideas still swirling. Recommendations and requests are welcome!
When will this start? IN TWO WEEKS! If you decide to join the paid tier, you’ll have a choice to start off with a free 1-week trial. That way it gives you some time to make a decision :) You also have 2 weeks to think about it.
I don’t want to join the paid tier. BUT, is there another way I can help you out? Why yes, friend. You can share my newsletter with other folks and spread the love! That would be MUCH appreciated 💓
Some extras that I hope to add in the future: merch, podcast episodes, and interviews. Here’s to trying new things!
And onto this week’s list:
I don’t remember what YouTube video I was watching that led me here, but I enjoyed this deep dive on Paul Dano’s past roles. He’s had some of the most interesting and riveting roles, but it’s interesting to see a major actor that’s so quiet and serious. He doesn’t seem to do that many interviews or be on a lot of red carpets, so it’s nice to see him talk for an extended period of time about his work. He’s also the lead singer of a band called Mook.
One more Paul Dano video, the most serious Hot Ones that I’ve seen lol
An in-depth article from The Guardian about why all coffee shops look the same aka a deeper look at globalization (or globalisation as the British spell it). The “instagramification” of it all has made a lot of what we see very same-same and predictable. It genuinely seems difficult to be authentic in your social media life, but is that something to aspire to at all? Maybe a question for another time.
Ham Bo Kyung’s art is a great mix of old Korean art with today’s lifestyle. What do I mean? See for yourself:
Here’s an interview with her on Art? Art! where she explains more of the techniques and inspiration behind her work.
Very cool Instagram find via Daniel Benneworth-Gray’s newsletter called high.school.high that curates and compiles old yearbook covers. My yearbooks were not as cool-looking as these.
Do you miss hearing Gap’s playlists from the years 1992-2006? Do I have the find for you! Michael Bise is trying to find and compile all the Gap store playlists from those years, and has a blog, IG, and Spotify. I love the internet sometimes. You find people doing the most niche and fun things. I wonder if there’s one for American Apparel out there because let me tell you…as someone who worked there for a few years, we got REAL sick of those playlists lol but there’s also a nostalgia that comes with it.
Loved reading about someone’s experience moving from Brooklyn to a farmhouse…in Japan! Hannah Kirshner is the first woman and foreigner to work at a 14th-generation sake brewery in rural Ishikawa. What a story!! You can follow her here or her home restoration journey here.
The most interesting thing she shared was:
The biggest challenge with moving abroad: Even as I am accepted into this community, I am a perpetual guest. This is not the culture I was born into, so I walk a tightrope of respecting local norms while staying true to myself.
Well said.
Really good read on why and how mid-century modern furniture got so big in America. Hint: it didn’t start with West Elm or Mad Men.
Quick article section: a) why we shouldn’t be putting our iPhones in rice when they get wet (I thought we should!), b) Starbucks will deliver late night coffee and started in Philly?!, and c) we gotta wait until 2025 for the Nintendo Switch 2 console.
Hope the news wasn’t anti-climactic lol have a great week friends! Looks like we’re getting a bit of warmer weather too, hope you can get some quality outside time :)
This is awesome Kat. Excited for you! Hoping to support in the future :^)
