You know, the more TV and movies I watch, I keep thinking to myself…should I learn Morse code? It just seems like it’d be good in an emergency situation. But then…it’s only useful if the person I’m sending it to knows it as well. It’s come up so often over the years in movies and tv shows (Lost in Space, Parasite, A Murder at the End of the World, Sherlock Holmes, etc.), and maybe I’m growing more paranoid lol but who’s down to learn with me 😂 Anyway, let’s not start off Monday with paranoia. Let’s start off with this week’s list:
A few weeks ago when I was in SF, I was trying to convince my friend Jess that I had good music taste lol we could at least agree on John Mayer songs, when I then chose to play “New Light.” I had never seen the music video, and she and her husband were shocked and made me watch it immediately. It makes the song even better hahah see for yourselves:
Do yall remember the movie The Farewell? It was directed by Lulu Wang and starring Awkwafina. If you haven’t watched it yet, I’d recommend it! Anyway, she directed a show that recently came out called Expats (Amazon Prime), starring Nicole Kidman. I’m only half an episode in and can’t speak to it yet until I watch a few more, but I reallllly enjoyed this podcast episode with her and Sam Fragoso on his show Talk Easy. I related to so many things she talked about, and I also appreciated her thoughtfulness and nuance on several topics esp. family and the nature of not fully belonging to one culture or place. Give it a listen! :)
Do you like coffee? Do you like Robert Downey Jr.? Well you can have both because Bobby D. Jr. started a coffee company called Happy Coffee! You can try his brews at places like Target and Sprouts (or online). Not loving the packaging, a bag would suffice…but Ieroo loves a mini-box so this might be up his alley.
Call me a leather rebel, but I realllly appreciate people like Volkan Yilmaz who literally rips apart leather luxury goods and lets you know if it’s really worth the price tag. I think there should be more content like this out there, not because I want to see designers lose money…but if you’re going to invest that kind of $ it’s good to have all the information you can! NYTimes wrote about him here, but you can check out his content via his IG or TikTok. His family owned a tannery in Turkey, so you could say he knows a bit about the biz. Don’t hate me when you realize that some designer goods are truly not worth it 😬
What’s your favorite movie soundtrack? I don’t remember the last time I listened to one straight through… maybe TRON: Legacy bc it was made by Daft Punk or Garden State bc cmon, that movie soundtrack was the sound of our time (2004). Here’s a list of the top 40 movie soundtracks according to Independent. Wow, the #1 spot surprised me, but upon listening to it again I’m reminded of all the sick scenes in that movie and totally agree.
I loveddd the movie The Talented Mr. Ripley (Matt Damon, Jude Law, and Gwyneth Paltrow), probably bc Italy and late 1950s fashion. Anyway, the great Adam Scott is taking on the role in Netflix’ Ripley. It looks mysterious, and a lot darker…but I’m hoping this is good!
In other TV news, I recently finished A Murder at the End of the World and Pachinko. The ending of A Murder… was disappointing. I think the writing there really took a fall, which seems such a shame with a stacked cast like that. Pachinko had some great acting but was so hard for me to watch at times because of all the family members it made me think of. If you haven’t watched it yet, I’d recommend it but only if you’re ready to cry haha
Sorry, lots of TV recommendations this week lol but I had to share this dance competition show I randomly found called Dance Life (Amazon Prime). It’s only 5 episodes, so it’s a nice short watch. It focuses on several dance students who enroll in the full time program at Brent Street Studios, which is a performing arts school in Sydney. Alumni of the school have worked with artists like Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Kylie Minogue, etc., so it’s a school with major credibility. I love watching dancers, so if you like a bit of drama, real people dancing their hearts out, and young people going for their dreams then this is a good watch for you!
Love what Candace Hicks does with notebooks. You can also purchase her artwork here.
It’s finally February, we made it through January (phew)! Have a great week friends :)
